The path

Adult Care /Interaction Design /Design Systems

A conversation game that evokes memories and fosters relationships, designed with attention to people suffering from cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer's.

Adapted from reminiscence therapy, an intervention using props such as images, videos, music, and physical objects to recollect one's earlier lifetime.

Duration
3 months
Similar to a D&D story generator deck, The Path helps the facilitator (in this case, often the younger adult) spark conversations by providing fun prompts about stories of their elderly loved one.
various card types
Using a variety of "artifact cards" in order to provide multisensory stimulation through photographs, music, and personal objects, which can help evoke long-term memories and positive moods.
The facilitator can also add notes to artifacts, allowing both individuals to revisit the memory after their time together.
Throughout the conversation, the facilitator and the person living with Alzheimer's can explore a series of prompts. Leveraging LLMs and image recognition, the question deck is dynamically updated based on previously explored prompts or artifacts.
A path takes form as the story unfolds.
Saving a path for future sessions or group sharing.
